I love it when I see evidence of law of attraction in the news. Even though I KNOW law of attraction is the way the world works, it still gives me joy to see it played out in a large way.
A friend sent me a news article about the upcoming election, and one of the issues on the ballot in California is the legalization of marijuana. The article he sent was abut the decriminalization of all drug use in Portugal more than ten years ago. (Selling and trafficking is still a crime there, but personal use and possession is not.)
Now regardless of where you stand on this issue, law of attraction teaches that what you push against most is what you have to deal with most. We all know that the ‘war on drugs’ in the United States has been a dismal failure. Drugs are rampant on every corner in the inner city, they take their toll on the medical system, and the punitive drug laws have made criminals of recreational users. Not to mention the cost to the taxpayers of incarcerating so many people for such little infractions. The war on drugs has taken lots of time, taxpayer money and effort, and we have nothing to show for it except more drugs in our communities.
Compared to our ‘war on drugs’, Portugal has taken a much more enlightened approach. Portugal’s decriminalization has been a resounding success by every measure. Portugal, which had one of the worst drug problems in Europe, has seen drug use decline significantly and has seen drug related illnesses like HIV and hepatitis decline significantly also.
To me this is pure evidence that the best way to get what you want is to stop pushing against it. You take your attention off the result that you don’t want, and put your attention on the outcome you want. Portugal offers medical treatment to their addicted users, not incarceration and they’ve found that, “counseling is more effective than prison in turning addicts into nonusers.”
The article makes the point that with decriminalization, first the stigma to users and fear of prosecution are eliminated. Second, money is freed up for treatment and prevention that was being used for “arresting, prosecuting and imprisoning” people. Portugal is putting their money, time and attention on the result they want – ending addiction, and they are seeing great results for it. That is law of attraction in action.
In a related thought: On May 13, 2009, R. Gil Kerlikowske, the current director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, signaled that though the Obama administration did not plan to significantly alter drug enforcement policies, it would not use the term “war on drugs,” saying it was “counterproductive.” Our President is a man who understands law of attraction.
