I stopped into Dunkin’ Donuts™ early this morning. And as I was standing there in the crowd waiting for my line to move forward, I noticed a guy at the counter in the next line beside me. He was selecting a dozen donuts to fill a big box and he was being very deliberate about it.
He said, “I’ll have some of those.” “No, not those.” “Yes, two of those and one of that kind.” “And a few of those, and three of those.” “None of that, and none of those there.” “I’ll have some of those – no, not that one, those up there.”
The line behind him was long and he was very careful about his selections. He wasn’t an old guy either; he looked to be in his early 30’s. I imagined that as he made his choices that he was thinking of those who would enjoy them with him. He didn’t let the length of the line or the impatience of those behind him deter him from his choices.
As I watched him, I found myself enjoying his careful process. I’ve found myself thinking of him all day – his calm and precise selection of exactly the right donuts. And I started wondering, how many of us are as careful with our thoughts as we are with our donuts?
Hmmm, which one is more important? LOL
were I to be buying a dozen donuts or more i would likely have a care like this guy, consider who I am buying them for. I am slowly learning to be as selective in my thoughts.
Hi Mike
Good to hear from you. Thanks for the comment. When are you coming back to the meetup?
Thank you for the insight. I needed this today. Interesting way of looking at it! Could this help me get out of hesitating or ruminating on decisions too much? If I can remember that I can easily pick which donuts I want, I can choose other things.
Hi Elsa
So nice to hear from you. When you are stuck in a rut, hesitating or ruminating too much, take your thoughts to apprectiation. Find something, even something small, to appreciate for a few minutes and it will shift your vibration upwards enough to give you a new perspective on the decision you need to make. How is the salsa dancing going?
It is very interesting that you write this for I have been paying more and more attention to what I’m thinking and more importantly, what I choose to think about. When I catch myself “going there” I will tell myself to focus and that has helped to bring me back to the present moment or to think thoughts that serve me.
But how often do we give more care to something like selecting donuts than we do to our thoughts… Thanks for this!
loved this one….indeed to put such care into our our thought choices as our donut choices–a wonderful observation and reminder!
Thank you for the suggestion! I will try that next time. The salsa dancing is going well. I go less often–my feet and joints needed a break. I hope you’re well! I have to make it to your LOA meeting soon. Take care.
wondering what that remark ‘he was not an old guy either’ was about?
Hi Zannie
Older people often speak and move more slowly than yournger people, and they often take more time to make up their minds. I know; I’m one of them. lol
I really like this one about the donuts…i was thinking he was selecting for himself…nice work. “
